Power Station Upgrade

Energy markets are very different now to those which existed when Teesside Power Station was commissioned in 1993.  Today’s power plants need to be more flexible and able to respond to a more dynamic and fast-changing climate of supply and demand.

In 1993, Teesside Power Station was one of the first gas-fired power plants in the UK.  Since then there have been major technological advances in power generation equipment.  Over the past 15 years we have made a number of modifications to improve the efficiency of the plant.  Now we want to replace some of the existing gas and steam turbines with four new 300 megawatt gas turbines and two new 340 megawatt steam turbines.  Under the new configuration steam would continue to be used to produce electricity where it was not needed by nearby process industries.

As the output of the new turbines will be greater than the units they would replace, the total number of gas turbines on site would eventually be reduced to maintain the overall power output of the Power Station at the present level – 1875 megawatts.  The upgraded plant would be contained within the existing site boundary.
