GDF SUEZ purchased the 210MW Shotton Combined Heat and Power Plant in 2003, making a major investment in clean generation technology. Shotton CHP produces enough electricity to power around 375, 000 homes a year. As well as generating electricity for export to the National Grid, the station is capable of supplying steam to local businesses for use in their own processes. This supply of useful heat has enabled Shotton CHP to have a proportion of its output certified as “Good Quality” CHP by the Combined Heat and Power Quality Assurance Programme (CHPQA) making a major contribution to the government’s targets in regard to emissions.
Key Figures
- The plant uses General Electric 6FA Gas Turbines, which are of a dry low NOx type, reducing harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides.
- Produces up to 210MW of power, which is exported to the National Grid.
- Shotton CHP is accredited under the Environmental Standard ISO 14001.
- Shotton CHP has an enviable safety record which has been recognised through the achievement of numerous safety awards (QSA, RoSPA Gold Award).
